How many people live in each block?
Population estimates for 464 blocks from the 2020 census, below governorate level. Half of Bahrain's population lives in 86 of 499 blocks.
In short
Half of Bahrain's population lives in 86 of 499 blocks (17.2% of blocks). Total population: 1,501,635.
The 10 most populous blocks hold 11.8% of the population.
Most populous block: Al Fatih (block 0324), about 33,615 people.
Who it is for
Retail, food and delivery businesses and consultancies: to estimate market size around a proposed site and choose branch or service locations below governorate level.
Method: what we add to the raw data
- Each governorate's 2020 census total was used: Capital 548,345, Muharraq 268,106, Northern 379,637, Southern 305,547.
- Residential buildings were taken from building footprints classed as residential; each was assigned its zoning class and block from its representative (interior) point.
- Floor area was estimated as footprint times an assumed number of floors per zoning class (see table): 2 for private and row housing, 3 to 8 for multi-use buildings, 1.5 where unclassified.
- Each governorate's population was distributed over its residential buildings in proportion to floor area, then summed per block (dasymetric mapping).
- Density is estimated population divided by total block area.
- The map is classified with Natural Breaks (Jenks) on density.

Limitations
- Figures are estimates, not counts: actual floor numbers are unavailable and were assumed by zoning class; towers may be under-estimated and low-rise buildings over-estimated.
- The estimate assumes one occupancy per square metre of floor area within each governorate; high-occupancy labour housing is under-estimated.
- The base is the 2020 census; it reflects neither later population growth nor new housing projects.
- Buildings not classed as residential are excluded, so residents of unclassified mixed buildings do not appear in their blocks.
- The last update date of building footprints is not documented.
- The remaining 35 blocks have an estimated population of zero: 34 have no residential buildings classed as such, and Diyar Al Muharraq (block 0266) has only 2 residential buildings with an estimate below half a person, rounded to zero.
- 2 residential building(s) lie outside the drawn block boundaries and were excluded from the distribution; the effect is negligible.
- Hawar Islands are included in the data but lie outside the map frame.
