Where are the palms most in need of intervention? 262,700 palms with health classes, 51.1% needing immediate action, with blocks ranked by intervention priority.
In short
262,700 palms: 134,173 need immediate action (51.1%), 110,944 need monitoring (42.2%), 17,425 healthy (6.6%), 158 no class (0.1%).
In 23 of 119 blocks with 500+ palms the share needing action exceeds 70%; highest is Dilmunia (block 0269) at 99.4% of 709 palms.
10 blocks hold 23.0% of all palms needing immediate action.
Who it is for
Agricultural bodies, landscaping and pest-control firms: to identify the blocks most in need of intervention and size the work before contracting or field planning.
Method: what we add to the raw data
- Supplied with the data: each palm's location, crown NDVI value and health class in three groups. Class limits as observed in the data: below 0.2 needs immediate action, 0.2 to 0.35 needs monitoring, above 0.35 healthy.
- Added by us: harmonised class spelling, conversion of each palm to a point at its crown centre, and assignment to its block.
- Also added: per-block counts per class, share needing action, median NDVI, and a ranking of blocks with 100+ palms by the number needing action.
- The map is classified with Natural Breaks (Jenks) on the share needing immediate action.

Limitations
- The imagery behind the index dates from 2021; the month is not documented and conditions today may differ.
- NDVI measures canopy greenness, not a specific pest; a palm classed as needing action may be infested, water-stressed or recently pruned.
- Recently planted palms, as in reclamation projects, register low NDVI because of small crowns, not disease; the highest share among large blocks (Dilmunia, 99.4%) lies in a recent reclamation area and should be read with caution.
- The health class is supplied with the data and was not recomputed; what we added is aggregation and ranking.
- Palms were detected automatically from imagery, each with a confidence score; detection may miss palms or include other trees. 158 palms have no health class.
- Share needing action and priority rank are NULL in blocks with fewer than 100 palms.
- 3,911 palms (1.5% of all palms), 1,378 of them needing immediate action, lie on coastal or reclaimed land beyond the drawn block boundaries. They are summed in an 'Outside blocks' row of the block table (block number NULL, not ranked) and shown on the map as dark dots.
- Hawar Islands are included in the data but lie outside the map frame.
