How many people live in each Syrian sub-district and village today?
A 2025 population estimate (25,170,891 people) for every governorate, district, 272 sub-districts and 5,713 communities, with density, age groups, women aged 15–49, and change since the 2004 census — plus 100 m population cells to count people inside any boundary you draw.
In short
25,170,891 people in 2025, against 17,381,515 in the 2004 census.
2,553,415 children under five (10.1%) and 7,013,876 women aged 15–49.
Most populous governorates: Aleppo (4,413,298), then Rural Damascus, then Hama.
Who it is for
Humanitarian and development organisations sizing needs and beneficiaries, local councils, researchers, and planning and geography students.
Method: what we add to the raw data
- Population cells (100 m) were summed over governorate, district and sub-district boundaries by burning the boundaries onto the same cell grid, without resampling.
- Each of the 5,713 communities got a catchment: the land closer to it than to any other community (Voronoi polygons) clipped to Syria, so dispersed population belongs to a community.
- Five-year age bands were grouped into the usual humanitarian groups: under 5, 5–14, 15–64, 65+, and women 15–49.
- Every level was linked to its 2004 census population and the percentage change computed.
- 69,334 people in cells on the border edges outside the polygons were assigned to the nearest sub-district, so sub-district totals match the national total.
- Density uses true area on an equal-area projection.

Limitations
- Figures are a modelled estimate distributing people over buildings and settlements, not a census; they may diverge where displacement or recent return occurred.
- Community catchments are approximate: nearest by distance, not actual cadastral or administrative limits.
- Change since 2004 compares a census with an estimate — read it as a general trend, not an exact figure.
- Age-group totals may differ slightly from the overall total because each group is estimated separately.
