How many people in each Syrian sub-district felt strong shaking on 6 February 2023?
Modified Mercalli shaking intensity for every cell (the higher of the two shocks, magnitude 7.8 and 7.5), population of every sub-district in each intensity class, 119 fault lines, and a catalogue of 1,136 earthquakes in and around Syria since 1900.
In short
8,688,071 people in Syria experienced strong shaking (intensity VI+), 2,886,182 of them at VII+.
Sub-districts with the most exposed people are listed in the exposure table.
1,136 earthquakes of magnitude 3.5+ in the catalogue, 113 of them 5+.
Who it is for
Structural engineers assessing buildings, civil defence and organisations planning for emergencies, and geology and engineering students.
Method: what we add to the raw data
- Shaking intensity was taken for each of the two shocks and the higher value kept per cell, since buildings experienced both.
- Intensity was transferred to the 100 m population grid by linear interpolation, and population was summed per intensity class for each sub-district.
- Intensity uses Modified Mercalli classes: IV or less light, V moderate, VI strong, VII very strong, VIII+ severe.
- Intensity-zone polygons were extracted and each fault line's length computed.
- An earthquake catalogue of magnitude 3.5+ in and around Syria since 1900 was assembled, with a field marking events inside Syria (52).

Limitations
- Intensity is estimated from ground-motion models and stations, not measured at every site; local soil can amplify or reduce shaking.
- Population is a 2023 estimate, not a census.
- The catalogue before the 1960s is incomplete for moderate earthquakes due to sparse stations.
- Fault lines are simplified regional lines, not detailed fault maps for structural design.
FAQ
- How long does delivery take?
