Syrian Arab Republic
Boundaries of Syria's seven water basins, 10,726 stream segments totalling 56,646 km — each with its Strahler order, gradient, basin and sub-district — 365 drainage basins of 10 km² or more with their outlets, and a per-sub-district table of stream length, drainage density and main basin.
In short
Share of Syria by basin: Euphrates and Aleppo 46.5%, Badia 22.3%, Tigris and Khabur 12.0%, Orontes 8.5%, Barada and Awaj 4.8%, Yarmouk 3.6%, Coastal 2.3%.
10,726 stream segments, 56,646 km in total, highest order 7.
The densest drainage networks are listed in the sub-district table.
Who it is for
Geography, water and agricultural engineering students, water-harvesting and small-dam projects, and flash-flood and road-drainage studies.
Method: what we add to the raw data
- Streams were derived from a 90 m digital surface model: sinks were filled, then D8 flow direction and accumulation were computed.
- A stream is any path draining 10 km² or more, ranked by Strahler order.
- Segment gradient = elevation difference between its ends ÷ its length, in percent.
- Drainage basins were delineated after filling only shallow sinks (up to 20 m), so real closed depressions such as the Ghouta, Jabbul and the Badia sabkhas stay as separate sinks.
- Each basin was assigned to one of the seven water basins by where it drains: the sea, the Orontes exit to Türkiye, the Euphrates at Al-Bukamal, the Yarmouk, the Tigris, the Badia borders, or the closed depression it ends in.
- Watersheds of the Khabur, Barada, Awaj and Quweiq were delineated from points on their channels, since they drain into another basin or a closed lake, and assigned to their official basins.
- Drainage density = stream length ÷ area, in km per km².

Limitations
- Streams are derived from terrain, not field survey; on flat plains (Jazira, Badia) a path may deviate from the actual channel.
- The seven basin boundaries follow the rule above and approximate the official ones, but may differ on flat land and closed depressions.
- Boundaries follow actual flow, so the Euphrates basin includes southern Badia wadis that drain into it; its area is larger, and the Badia smaller, than in the official division.
- The surface model includes buildings and trees, so some streams may break inside cities.
- Sinks shallower than 20 m were treated as model errors and filled, so they drain through the lowest point of their rim.
