How many hectares of each Syrian sub-district are cropland, trees, built-up or bare?
10 m land-cover cells for every governorate in 8 classes, with the area of each class in hectares per sub-district, district and governorate, using each cell's true area. Cropland covers 26.3% of Syria.
In short
Cropland 4,922,841 ha (26.3%); bare land 51.2%.
Governorates with most cropland: Al-Hasakeh, Aleppo, Ar-Raqqa.
Trees cover 2.05% of Syria; built-up 294,358 ha.
Who it is for
Researchers and postgraduate students, agricultural directorates, food-security and environmental organisations, and regional planners.
Method: what we add to the raw data
- Land-cover cells (2021, 10 m) were clipped to each governorate in a separate file, with an embedded colour table so they open coloured.
- Each cell's true area at its latitude was used (cells get smaller northwards), not a cell count.
- Areas were summed per class for each sub-district, then districts, governorates and the national total.
- Shares of trees, cropland, built-up and bare land and the dominant class were added per sub-district.
