Agricultural drought in Syria 2001–2025: spring green-up peak each season compared with normal, per sub-district

Was the rain-fed wheat and barley season in your sub-district worse than normal?

The spring green-up peak (March–April) of every year from 2001 to 2025 on 250 m cells, compared with the 25-year median, per sub-district. In 2025 the national peak was -32.0% versus normal.

In short

The 2025 season was -32.0% versus normal, ranking 1 of 25 from worst.

118 sub-districts had a very poor and 62 a poor 2025 season, out of 271 with greening land.

Worst seasons: 2025 (-32.0%), 2008 (-24.5%), 2022 (-18.8%).

Who it is for

Food-security and early-warning organisations, agricultural directorates, drought researchers, and grain and fodder investors.

Method: what we add to the raw data

  • 16-day NDVI composites at 250 m for March and April of every year were used, removing unreliable cells (cloud and shadow).
  • Each cell's yearly peak is the highest value among the season's composites, representing maximum growth of rain-fed crops and rangeland.
  • Normal = the 25-year median peak (half the seasons below, half above).
  • Only land that actually greens up (median 0.2 or more) is used, so bare Badia does not dilute averages.
  • Each season is rated: very poor (≥25% below), poor (10–25%), normal (±10%), good (≥10% above).

Limitations

  • The index measures greenness, not tonnes; it shows the season's direction, not harvest quantity.
  • Irrigated land stays green in drought, softening the drop in sub-districts with irrigation.
  • 250 m cells mix small fields with their surroundings.
