Which neighbourhoods of Damascus, Aleppo and Homs are hottest in summer, and by how much?
Summer land surface temperature on 30 m cells (median of clear June–August 2023–2025 images), the difference from each city's median, a ranking of 242 neighbourhoods from hottest, hotspot area 3 °C or more above the median, and the green share of each neighbourhood.
In short
Hottest relative to its city: Fealat Sharqiyeh in Damascus (+5.6 °C).
Coolest: Rawda in Damascus (-4.2 °C).
Median summer land surface temperature: Aleppo 47.5 °C, Damascus 45.7 °C, Homs 45.0 °C.
Who it is for
Municipalities choosing where to plant trees and add shade, architecture and planning students, and climate and public-health organisations.
Method: what we add to the raw data
- Landsat 8 and 9 images for June, July and August 2023–2025 with under 10% cloud were collected, masking cloud and shadow cells.
- Raw values were converted to °C and the per-cell median taken (half the images below, half above), so an unusual day does not distort it.
- The difference from the median of each city's cells was computed, so neighbourhoods are compared within the same city.
- For each neighbourhood: median temperature, the 90th-percentile temperature (exceeded by its hottest 10% of cells), hotspot area 3 °C or more above the median, and green share from NDVI.

Limitations
- This is land surface temperature, not air temperature: asphalt at midday can exceed 55 °C while the air above is much cooler.
- The satellite passes around 10:30, so night-time heat is not represented.
- The thermal band's native resolution is 100 m, resampled to 30 m.
