Method: what we add to the raw data
- All 1,063 site names and descriptions were translated into Arabic using the names established in Syria (Tadmur, Afamia, Busra, Qalaat Semaan…), with a manual spot-check.
- The "Dead Cities" use their Syrian name, "the Forgotten Cities" (المدن المنسية).
- Sites were classified into 11 Arabic classes, and each site's city or site group was extracted from its name.
- Coordinates were converted to decimal, and dimensions kept where recorded (0 in the source became empty).
- Every site was linked by location to its governorate, district and sub-district.
- Tables: site groups with their number of sites, and classes per governorate.
