Who it is for

Contractors, engineering offices, municipalities and organisations working on reconstruction and shelter: to size the work per neighbourhood and set priorities.

Method: what we add to the raw data

  • Seven different scales were unified into one four-level scale: none or slight, moderate repairable, severe, dangerous or collapsed. The original assessment is kept in its own field.
  • Mapping: 0–10%, "green" and partial = 1; 11–30%, "yellow" and moderate = 2; 31–60%, "red" and severe = 3; over 60%, "very dangerous" and "collapsed" = 4.
  • All personal data was removed from the original surveys: residents' names and phone numbers, property numbers, names of engineers and committees, and report codes.
  • Building use was standardised in Arabic and English where recorded.
  • Buildings were summarised over 71 neighbourhoods and zones, with the share of severe or dangerous buildings in each.
  • Every building was linked to its governorate, district and sub-district.

Limitations

  • Surveys were carried out at different times and in different circumstances (war and the 2023 earthquake), so comparisons between cities are approximate.
  • Deir ez-Zor, Az-Zabadani and An-Nashabiyeh use a three-level scale in the source, so they have no level 4.
  • Coverage is partial: surveyed neighbourhoods only, not whole cities.
  • Building use is recorded for only 12,528 buildings.
  • Assessments are visual field surveys and do not replace detailed structural study before repair.
