Tunisia low-lying coast: 2,912 km² below five metres and 940,953 people living there

Tunisia's low-lying coastal land in three bands (below 1, 2 and 5 metres) with the population in each, and a table per coastal delegation.

The product separates land actually connected to the sea from closed depressions such as the chotts and sebkhas (1,288 km²) — a crucial distinction, since a closed depression is not flooded by the sea merely because it is low.

In short

2,912 km² of coastal land lies below five metres, home to 940,953 people (7.7% of the country).

Below one metre: 1,030 km² and 48,925 people.

The delegations with the most people below five metres are listed in the table.

Who it is for

Environmental and climate organisations, coastal municipalities, consultancies, researchers and insurers.

Method: what we add to the raw data

  • Elevation cells below each threshold were taken from the 90 m model.
  • Land connected to the sea was separated by connected growth from the sea through low cells: anything not connected is a closed depression, not land exposed to inundation.
  • Closed depressions are supplied as their own layer so the user sees them instead of having them silently dropped.
  • The bands were read against the population distribution, giving population per band rather than land area alone.
  • Results were aggregated per coastal delegation: area and population in each band and their share.

Limitations

  • This is elevation-based exposure, not inundation modelling: it excludes tide, storms, defences and land subsidence.
  • The surface model includes buildings and trees, raising elevations in cities and reducing the area counted below a threshold.
  • 90 m cells do not represent narrow barriers such as raised roads and coastal dykes.
  • The population distribution is a model, not a census, so figures are estimates.
  • The thresholds are fixed (1, 2 and 5 m) and do not represent any specific sea-level scenario or time horizon.
  • The inland chotts (Tozeur and Kébili) connect to the Gulf of Gabès through the low Chott el Fejej corridor, so they qualify as connected while not being coastal. They are excluded from the coastal figures (beyond 25 km from the sea) and supplied as a separate layer of 54 km².
