Republic of Tunisia
The reference soil map taught in agricultural institutes, with 3,206 soil units — each with its class, sub-class, detailed description and area — an Arabic key alongside the French original, a five-level indicative agricultural suitability, and a table of each class's area in every delegation.
In short
3,206 soil units covering 117,855 km² in 9 major classes.
The largest classes by area are listed in the table.
20.8% of the mapped area is of good or moderate suitability; 13,971 km² is unfit (sebkhas and saline soils).
Who it is for
Agricultural institutes and faculties, agricultural consultancies, regional agricultural development offices, and farm investors.
Method: what we add to the raw data
- The source is in French with a pedological classification opaque to non-specialists, so an Arabic key was built for every class and sub-class, with the French original kept in each record.
- A five-level indicative agricultural suitability was derived from the soil class alone: good, moderate, limited, poor, unfit.
- Geometry was repaired and areas computed in an equal-area projection.
- Soil units were intersected with delegations, so each class's area per delegation is computed by intersection, not majority.
- Each delegation's share of good and moderate soil was computed against its mapped area.

Limitations
- The reference is the 1973 pedological classification; later change (salinisation, erosion, urban expansion) is not updated. This is stated plainly.
- Suitability is indicative, derived from soil class and sub-class, with no water, slope, climate or sample analysis. It is not an investment decision on its own.
- It describes the soil, not the growing season: a delegation in the arid south may hold soil of moderate intrinsic quality yet receive under 150 mm of rain. Read it together with the rainfall product.
- The scale is general and national: suitable for regional planning and teaching, not for a farm plan.
- The map covers 117,855 km² and does not extend into the far Saharan south; areas outside it carry no classified soil here.
- Every unit is classified in the source, with the Arabic field complete.
