Republic of Tunisia
3,621 geological formations covering Tunisia, each with its code, stratigraphic age, lithology, area and governorate, plus 8 geological eras for quick symbology, an Arabic key to 97 terms, and a table of area per era per governorate.
In short
3,621 formations covering 155,782 km² across 8 geological eras.
The largest eras by area are listed in the table.
An Arabic key to 97 terms, 54 distinct stratigraphic ages and 67 lithological descriptions.
Who it is for
Geology, mining and geotechnical engineering students, consultancies, and mining and groundwater companies.
Method: what we add to the raw data
- The source map is in French with abbreviated codes, so an Arabic key was built for every term it uses.
- Stratigraphic age names are transliterated as used in Arabic geological literature, with the French original kept in every record.
- Each formation was assigned to its geological era (Quaternary to Permian), the usual field for symbology.
- Geometry was repaired, invalid polygons dropped, and areas computed in an equal-area projection.
- Each formation carries its majority governorate, and area per era per governorate was computed by intersection, not by majority.

Limitations
- The source is a national-scale general geological map: suitable for regional studies and teaching, not for detailed design or a site geotechnical report.
- The Arabic key follows common usage in the literature; the French original is kept in every record so a specialist can check it.
- 370 formations carry no age in the source, so their Arabic age field is empty.
- Lithology is a general description of the formation, not sample analysis.
